FINDING YOUR EMOTIONAL BALANCE: A GUIDE FOR WOMEN
Psychiatrist Merry Noel Miller, M.D. recently completed her book Finding Your Emotional Balance: A Guide for Women
Women are twice as likely as men to become depressed. While they seek help for mental disorders more often than men, they also seek to help others, trying to keep everyone happy while taking care of parents, spouses, and children. Sometimes, doing it all is doing too much.
In Finding Your Emotional Balance, Dr. Merry Noel Miller offers women of all ages advice for coping with life’s challenges while increasing its joys. Drawing on her three decades of experience as a psychiatrist specializing in women’s mental health—as well as her own personal struggles with depression and grief—she explains the special vulnerabilities and strengths of women during adolescence, the childbearing years, menopause, and late in life. Dr. Miller opens each chapter with stories about women who are dealing with issues related to their stage in life. She discusses common mental disorders in the context of life stages, exploring the symptoms of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, and unresolved grief. She also offers a variety of remedies, suggesting medical and non-medical approaches to finding emotional balance even in the most stressful times. Each chapter ends with a list of suggested readings and websites. Merry Noel Miller, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University. |

A wonderful book I'll be recommending to my women's support group
By Dyane Leshin Harwood on January 17, 2016
Dr. Miller's book "Finding Your Emotional Balance" is outstanding.
I was immediately drawn in by the introduction, in which psychiatrist Dr. Miller shares her own story with depression. Dr. Miller poignantly writes "I am the daughter of depression", for her mother suffered with the debilitating mood disorder. Moreover, Miller was derailed by depression during a key time in her life. She was able to recover, and thrive and she shares everything she learned since that event with the reader.
The book is comprehensive in that it contains a thoughtful examination of a woman's life stages, as well as the significant disorders that can challenge women at any time. I run a support group for women with mood disorders, and I'll be enthusiastically recommending this book to them, but any woman will benefit from reading this true labor of love. Dr. Miller has crystallized a lifetime of personal and professional experiences and lessons into this book, and it's worth it's weight in gold!

Wonderful read and resource for women from the teen years and beyond.

I was immediately drawn in from the first page! This book is excellent for females from the teen years and beyond. I wish I had this book years earlier! The case studies and the way the author explains the many stages a woman goes through in her life, make you realize you are not alone and are actually normal! Dr. Miller has put her years of experience, both professionally and personally into the pages of this book and produced a wonderful resource for women. I highly recommend this book.
